Self-care: a topic that we seem to hear a lot about in today’s climate. Everyone is raving about their new $300 product that just takes their stress away as if it were never there. You feel like you need every single app, every single product, and for some reason you feel like you need to take a whole week off in the name of “self-care.” Well, this isn’t exactly the case. That’s why I will be sharing a few simple yet beneficial practices to help you in your own “self-care journey.”
Develop a skincare routine
I’m sure that you have heard it before, but skincare is actually really important. However, you don’t need three different $450 eye creams to have a valuable skincare routine. Just a few basic products such as cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen will do the trick. While it seems like this practice is beneficial solely for your skin health, it can also work wonders for your mental health. A simple soothing moisturizer can help to relax you for bed each night, while a splash of water on your face can help you feel energized each morning.
Read
Let me preface this by saying that I am not your middle school English teacher who is making you read for 30 minutes each night and then forcing you to put it into your assigned reading log. I’m just saying that consistent reading is a great habit to get into for its immense benefits. For starters, it can help relax your mind while simultaneously strengthening it. Reading can teach you so many important lessons while also giving you the opportunity to immerse yourself into a whole different world. The best part is that you can do this from the comfort of your own home. And let me add that you don’t need to be reading “A Tale of Two Cities” for this practice to be worthwhile. The most important tip is that you should be reading something that you enjoy.
Move Your Body
Whether it is a 10 minute stroll outside or a 60 minute HITT workout, movement will always be important. Physical activity is an amazing tool that can help you with your physical health as well as your mental health. Movement can help you clear your mind, destress, and even help you fall asleep at night. Working out doesn’t have to be just about losing/maintaining weight - it is something that you can do to give your body and your mind a little treat. And trust me, if you create a solid and doable movement routine, you will thank yourself later.
Journal
Journaling is an amazing practice for so many reasons. For instance, journaling can help you clear your head and get some thoughts out. Some people suggest doing it in the morning to help get your day started the right way, while others like to do it at night as a way to destress right before they go to bed and fall asleep. Whichever method you choose, it will help you clear your mind and overall transform your mental health for the better.
