Within the blur of all of the TikTok and Instagram fads constantly buzzing, you may have noticed a recent social media trend circling: dopamine menus. These are things that people have on hand that they know they can do to release dopamine, a neurotransmitter related to happiness. These lists can include things like exercise, spending time with friends or family, reading a book, and more. Having a list of easy things you can do to release dopamine can be extremely beneficial, especially in difficult and/or stressful times. Thus, in this article, I will give a few examples of my favorite items on my dopamine menu, or what I like to call, happiness hacks.
Going for a walk
Like I mentioned above, exercise has been proven to be beneficial for happiness as it releases endorphins, among other positive things. For me personally, I find that taking a walk each day, preferably outside, does absolute wonders for my overall mood. It not only makes me happy, but also improves my focus, allowing me to be more productive later, and is a great way to get in movement. Specifically, walking outside and in nature can be a great way to unplug and destress.
Calling a long-distance friend
Calling a long-distance friend can be a great way to socialize, while also breaking the normal social routine. When talking to someone who is long-distance, it is likely that you will end up speaking about things that are different from what you talk about with your friends that live close by. Thus, this can be a great way to escape the stressors that are in your present world and bring your mind to a different place. Moreover, it can be really nice and refreshing to speak to someone you don’t interact with as much.
Pinterest
It is not a lie that social media can be detrimental. It can promote negativity, worsen focus and productivity, and even dampen one's mood. However, I find that Pinterest has the opposite effect for me. Although it undoubtedly is a form of social media, for me it is different in the sense that I use it simply to save images and ideas that I like, rather than using it to keep up with celebrities/influencers or post anything. I have created boards for my future home, fashion, and even just pieces of art that I like or find interesting. It is a great way for me to wind down after a long day and an alternative to other possibly more draining social media apps.
Watching childhood shows + movies
Watching an old, lighthearted movie is a great way to relax and wind down. Not only is it a great alternative to scrolling on social media, but I find that it can also produce happiness by providing comfort. Personally, I love watching old Disney Channel movies or TV shows during times of high stress as they are simple, lighthearted, and comforting.
While these are a few of my favorite “happiness hacks” or strategies, it can be extremely beneficial to have a few of your own to fall back on when needed. Feel free to get creative and find what makes you happy! :)
